I think of the current era as inversely symmetric to the Enlightenment of the Early Modern Period. In some sense, the Post-postmodern era is a period of Over-Enlightenment.

Rather than being held in the dark by ignorance, the modern serf is targeted and inundated with demographically specific messages that demand constant low level attention, to the point of paralysis or extremism.

Modern censorship is accomplished not by preventing communications, but by flooding media with commercially and ideologically motivated communications that omit or marginalize opportunities to find other sources of better information.

Given how the modern Internet was compared to the Gutenberg printing press early on, it is curious that more people did not anticipate a push by states to regulate the flow of ideas as an extrapolation of historical norm.
